Sometimes your journey through the better beer world can get a bit mundane. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that any day drinking a beer is better than any day not drinking a beer. That's nowhere near what I'm getting at. What I'm talking about is the ''Wow!'' factor, and how seemingly rare it is to come across these days. It seems as though the further down the path you go, those moments become few and far between. Here lately I've been on one of those dry spells. I've came across many tasty beers the past few weeks, and even a few that I might deem good or great. The problem is that I haven't had any of those true eye opening moments. Then yesterday while roaming the isles of a local craft brew provider, something caught my eye that looked strangely familiar. After taking a few steps closer, I discovered that I was face to face with 12 ounce versions of Dark Truth Stout from Boulevard Brewing Company.

Now before I go into great detail about Dark Truth Stout, I should probably preface things with an admission. I have what some might call an odd habit. Anytime I'm out and about and I see an interesting offering in a large bottle, I have to grab it. Then it may sit in my cellar for two or three years, waiting for the perfect moment when a friend is over and the mood strikes me as it being time to release it from its glass confines. Such is the case for two large bottles of Dark Truth Stout because I purchased going on three years ago. And truth be told, it was the label that caught my eye as I said to myself ''Hey! That looks strangely familiar. Smaller, but still familiar.'' And so begin my inspection of the smaller bottles of what turned out to be glorious dark brew juice.

Once my purchase was made, I raced home with those bottles in hand, and dove for the nearest snifter to place ones glorious contents in. As you can tell from my helpful picture, I might have been a little bit giddy on the poor, as I did have a terrifying moment where I thought we might have some serious head loss. As it turns out though, the snifter managed to contain all of it's glorious mocha colored girth. As soon as my heart rate returned to a somewhat normal pace, I realized the wonderful aromas that were filling the room. Roasted malts, ripe plums, light chocolates, smoked peat, some hints of mocha, and even notes of burnt sugar and molasses danced through the air with ease. Once all of that is allowed to settle in, there is a nice nostril burn from the alcohol and it only adds to the delightful bouquet in the glass. My mind was instantly set into warp speed as I fought the urge to chug the entire snifter all at once.

After a few moments of further aromatic enjoyment and settled mind racing, I lifted the snifter to my lips and allowed the magic to continue. Some smoked, bittersweet chocolate greets you at first, and then some charred malts and dark coffee ease in to make themselves known. There are dancing notes of plums and dark cherries that can be detected with minimal effort, and with a bit of focus you can pick up on notes of toffee, and caramel as well. When people talk about a complex and delicious imperial stout, this is truly what they are speaking of. All of this mixed in with a creamy, almost velvety mouthfeel adds up for what can only be described as an absolutely amazing brew accomplishment.

The Dark Truth Stout is one of those beers that you rarely come across in the better beer world, so when you do, taking extra moments to pause and enjoy are completely acceptable. I can in all fairness admit that it actually took me about twice as long to drink my glass of it as it would a normal beer. Boulevard Brewing Company has crafted what can only be described as a masterpiece of a stout with Dark Truth, and I for one am glad that I have managed to add quite a few to my collection. I highly recommend it to all of the more advanced drinkers, and especially to those who love stouts. This is one of those beers that not only calls for a ''Wow'' moment pause, but actually demands it. Those new to the better beer world might want to approach it with a bit of caution, as it is probably to complex and big for a still untrained palate. My suggestion would be to grab a few and stash them away for a year or so from now when you have had some time to hone your taste buds to greater appreciate all of its awesomeness. As for me, you can rest assured that I will be making another stop at that store this week, and I plan on completely depleting their inventory. It will happen. Thats the truth. The whole truth. And nothing but all of the Dark Truth.
