A Tasty Quad With an Old Soul
A Review of Schlafly Quadrupel by Saint Louis Brewery, Inc. / Schlafly

I always find it difficult to review brews that seem to cross style barriers, be it intentional or not. There are many complex beers out there that can easily fit into multiple categories, but critics are forced to review them as their labeled style. Schlafly's Quadrupel is one of those beers. It has a lot of delicious quad qualities, but truth be told, I really wish I could review it as an Old Ale.

In the glass, this quad has a warm mahogany coloration and pours a bit thin. It instantly reminded me of a quality old ale instead of a quad, which usually has a much darker and heavier appearance. It's a beautiful beer, just atypical for a quad. The aroma is a mishmash of quad and old ale. The alcohol takes center stage like an old ale, but there are plenty of bready and caramel undertones that reign in the quad profile. I also detected some honey notes, which was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise.

That first sip quickly reminds you of the hefty 12% ABV. The alcohol once again takes center stage and never really dissipates from start to finish, which can get a bit distracting after a while. The high alcohol content tends to mask a lot of flavoring for the first half of the beer, but once you get used to it, you start to pick out all those underlying quad flavors. Lots of spices, sweet breads and roasted malts. The mouthfeel is very crisp and thin, which also reminded me of a quality old ale. The aftertaste is dry, tangy and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Overall, Schlafly's Quadrupel is a very nice beer. I can't call it a great quad because it reminds me too much of an old ale, but fans of either style can definitely appreciate it. I can recommend it to fans of heavier brews because it's quite the taste adventure. I view it as a special occasion brew. Throw one in the back of the refrigerator and forget about it. Then on that special day when you eye that shiny goblet in the cupboard, you can slyly look at the fridge and know it's time to tango.
