Brewer Bytes with Wild Wolf Brewing Co.
An Interview with Brewmaster Danny Wolf and Brewer Josh French

Once upon a time (back in early 2012), BrewChief ventured into Virginia to visit some friends and tour some breweries. The itinerary featured several established mainstays as well as a relative newcomer: the Wild Wolf Brewing Company based in Nellysford. Wild Wolf incorporates many destinations into one, including a brewery, restaurant, sports bar, and shopping village. It's an "everything for everyone" kind of place and ended up being a highlight of the trip. Oh yeah, and they also offer some damn tasty beers. BrewChief reconnected with brewers Danny Wolf & Josh French who were kind enough to offer up some Brewer Bytes.

Where do you see your brewery in the future?

Producing extremely high quality beer and continuing to do everything possible to produce the best beer possible. Our goal is to have our beer very strongly distributed in VA and possibly surrounding states. We don't plan to be a huge regional production facility.

What do you feel sets you apart from other brewers?

We're family owned and that allows us to focus on the quality and control the product 100%. As brewers we pride ourselves on being creative and thinking outside the box. We try to brew fun, drinkable, and sometimes even a little whacky beer!

What was your best brewing experience?

First of all just working closely everyday with the Wild Wolf team is rewarding in itself. Working in collaboration with other breweries along the Brew Ridge Trail has been a great experience. Also winning several medals in the VA Craft Brewers Cup Competition was a huge step for us. VA Craft Brewers Cup features all the breweries from VA, some of which are major players on the National level. It was a great feeling knowing our beer was on par.

How do you feel about beer reviewing and its impact on the industry?

It's subjective. Reviews can be a useful tool in finding a beer you love. It educates the beer drinker and gives them something to compare things too. But on the other hand, reviews seem to give less attention to small breweries and more attention to those cold classics. We think it's very important, yet the shift in focus can be taken too far.

What is the best thing about being a part of the beer industry?

The beer of course! But more importantly the camaraderie. We have a team of dedicated individuals--and that stretches beyond Wild Wolf. We get to be a part of this movement that is growing and slightly changing the world. It's incredibly rewarding to talk to people that we've impacted through our beer.
