The Golden Gate Bridge of Gateway Beers
A Review of Mama's Little Yella Pils by Oskar Blues Brewing Co.

Reviewing anything from Oskar Blues Brewery is pretty straight forward. Every single drop of beer they produce is extraordinary. Just as a friendly reminder, this is the brewery that has bestowed upon us the G'Knight Imperial Red, Ten FIDY Imperial Stout, Gubna Imperial IPA and Old Club Scotch Ale. Yes, THAT brewery. Today I finish their core product line by reviewing Mama's Little Yella Pils. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I ordered a pilsner on purpose and I actually liked it. This fact alone propels this beer to majestic heights.

In the glass, this beer has that classic straw coloration of a pilsner, but with a slightly deeper hue. The aroma is quite floral in nature with several crisp herbal and lemon notes. The hops came across as more grassy than tinny or bitter, which was a nice change of pace. I usually can't stand the smell of pilsners. They remind me of stagnant, rusty tap water. Luckily this isn't the case with Mama's. When pilsners are done right, they can be quite fragrant.

The first sip is quite pleasant with no distracting mineral notes. That nasty metallic taste common with mass produced garbage pilsners is nowhere to be found (thank goodness), which is what I always dread when trying them. The hop profile is nicely balanced with only a moderate amount of bitterness. This brew has hints of banana and orange, but not in a citrus way. It's more of a sweet undertone that really ties everything together. This brew has a heavier body, which is rare for a pilsner and gives your mouth something to chew on. The finish is clean and pleasant, leaving a lightly hopped aftertaste.

Overall, Mama's Little Yella Pils is a delicious brew. Not exactly surprising considering the source. We have come to expect a certain level of quality from Oskar Blues Brewery. I can recommend this beer to any level of beer drinker, but especially to novices. This is the Golden Gate Bridge of gateway beers. If you can manage it, try this brew along side any of the mass produced trash pilsners. I guarantee that you will never look at them the same way again. Your case of reliable Honda Civics will instantly transform into lime green Gremlins. Crap pilsners will cease having names and your brain will forever refer to them as simply ''NOT Mama's.''
