A tasty stylistic anomaly
A Review of Samuel Adams Double Bock by Boston Beer Co. / Samuel Adams

As a disclaimer, it's probably unfair for me to review the Samuel Adams Double Bock. I'm a passionate bock fan. It's my favorite beer style. I know ahead of time that if the brewery on the label isn't located somewhere in Germany, then chances are high that I'm going to be disappointed. It's an unfortunate truth, but few breweries outside of Bavaria can master the art of crafting a good bock. So going into the Samuel Adams version of a doppelbock, I find myself prepping for a let down. After all, it's a bock brewed in Boston by one of the largest non-macro breweries.

That being said, let me go on record as saying that the Samuel Adams Double Bock is a really good beer. It is part of the Samuel Adams Imperial Series, which span the spectrum and rarely disappoint. Regardless of what Boston Beer set out to make, this brew is definitely unique and exciting. I would like to see more of this style of beer because it is quite tasty. So while I have to rate this beer as a doppelbock, my dings shouldn't discourage anyone from trying it.

The aroma was somewhat weak and hard to get an initial read on. Doppelbocks tend to be very aromatic with plenty of caramel, chocolate, nutty and toasted notes. This one smelled more like a strong sweet amber to me. The appearance was oddly clean and clear for a big doppelbock. I found the reddish hue to be quite lovely, but was a little off for the style. To me, this brew tasted more like a cross between a hefty amber and a barrel aged beer. Interesting flavor, but not very bock-like. On the other hand, the mouthfeel was very much like a doppelbock: smooth and creamy with a lengthy malty aftertaste.

Overall, the Samuel Adams Double Bock is a very tasty beer with a unique character. I would certainly buy and enjoy more of them. I can certainly recommend them to seasoned beer fans looking for something new and interesting, but I just can't recommend it as a doppelbock. In all seriousness to Boston Beer, I hope they keep brewing this concoction. After all, these are the beers that make the craft beer movement so exciting.
