As summer nears its end and the fall months approach, the lighter seasonal brews are thinning out in the beer stores. We've had a lot of fun this summer exploring all of the quality lighter styles that the microbrew world has to offer. If you are fan of summer seasonals, I recommend scooping up a few of these tasty nectars before they are gone. Today I am enjoying Pyramid Brewery's Curve Ball Blonde Ale.

In the glass, this beer has a hazy deep straw coloration, resembling a lighter style of apple juice. The aroma is quite floral with a lot of citrus notes. It actually smells a lot like a witbier with plenty of lemon zest. As summer seasonals go, it has a welcoming first impression.

The mouthfeel is what initially grabs your attention with the first sip. It's quite tangy with a muted, yet balanced hop bite. As with most blonde ales, you're expecting a smoother easy drinking brew, but Curve Ball has more of a zesty spirited character (hence the ''curve ball'' I would imagine). There are plenty of citrus flavors swirling around in the beer, namely lemon and orange rind. The finish is light and tangy, almost like a tropical mixed drink.

Overall, Pyramid Brewery's Curve Ball Blonde Ale is a lovely seasonal brew. It has a delightful summer taste that is sure to please most brew fans. It's heftier than your average blonde, giving fans of bigger brews something to chew on. But it's also rich and zesty, providing a nice flavor punch for novices. I would recommend this beer more to novices because it can serve as a great bridge to better beer. And if you're just looking for something to stock the cooler with for a beach trip, definitely pick up some Curve Ball. It mingles quite well with margaritas and mai tais.
