Becoming a Lord of Dogtown
A Review of New Dogtown Pale Ale by Lagunitas Brewing Co.

Whenever beer fans begin their journeys through the lands of better beer, it is always necessary to find trusted breweries. Getting your feet wet doesn't mean that you are immediately on a quest for the top tier. You only want to find a few cozy blankets that you can fall back on if needed. Once such brewery for me has always been Lagunitas. Whenever I find myself in a situation where the available brews are suspect, I can always rely on Lagunitas to get me through the evening. I recently enjoyed their New Dogtown Pale Ale.

In the glass, this beer has a pleasant pure golden coloration. The aroma is very citrus forward with a warm hop profile resting underneath. The citrus takes on a more sweetened feel and reminds me of fresh oranges with a little bit of honey thrown in. Despite the warmth of the hop profile, the hop sting digs in on the first sip. It's actually quite sharp and catches you by surprise. Once you get used to the initial bite, the beer smooths out a bit in the middle ground, which opens up some lemon and pine characters. The citrus and hops battle for the dominant trait, which throws the balance off a bit. It's not significant enough to be concerning, but it is noticeable. The flavor train is actually really fast and exits in a flash, which I would assume is contributing to the lighter mouthfeel. The finish does leave a few bitter notes behind that tend to linger.

Overall, the Lagunitas New Dogtown Pale Ale is a tasty brew and a good representation of the pale ale style. While I wouldn't consider it a stellar brew, it's certain a very nice bridge to better beer. I'd even say that New Dogtown is a great bridge to IPAs. It's aggressive for a pale ale, but not so much as to be mistaken for a weak IPA. I can recommend this brew to any level of beer fan, but novices beware. Depending on your current tolerance level, it might be a bit combative. But once again, Lagunitas has given me a trusty fallback in the pale ale category. I'm sure I will be enjoying many of these in the future.
