Dreaming of snow and log cabins
A Review of Post Road Pumpkin Ale by Brooklyn Brewery
Posted on 9/3/2011 by Chops
I love when the fall months arrive. There is no greater time of year for a beer fan. Oktoberfest begins, beer festivals are in full swing and fall seasonals start to emerge. One of the tastiest seasonal creations is the pumpkin ale. There is something about the pumpkin flavor that magically compliments beer. Brewers will often differ in their approaches. Some chop pumpkins up and mix them with the malts. Some add pumpkin puree near the end of the brewing process. Whatever their means and when done right, pumpkin ales can be some of the most delightful brews in the microbrew world. Today I am sampling my first of the fall season: Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale.

In the glass, this beer has a deep hazy golden coloration. Pumpkin ales will often have this deep hue, which I assume is gained from the additional malt and added spices. On the nose, Post Road smells like a balanced mixture of hops and warming spices. It's a very welcoming brew and has a delightful fall themed intro.

You can immediately taste the pumpkin infused malt with the first sip. There are a lot of spice notes swirling around which are balanced beautifully with a tangy hop profile, as the aroma suggests. To my palate, Post Road tastes like a solid hoppy pale ale infused with spiced pumpkin goodness. The mouthfeel is very crisp, almost sharp due to the hop profile. The finish is quite spicy and leaves some hints of nutmeg. As the beer warms, the flavors merge further together to resemble a spiced pumpkin pie. In a word: yum!

Overall, Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale is a delightful seasonal treat. I can easily recommend this brew to any level of beer fan. Novices will enjoy it as a bold and flavorful upgrade. Seasoned enthusiasts will enjoy it as a hopped up variation of a warm and spicy seasonal. When you first taste Post Road, you can't help but imaging yourself in a snow dusted log cabin enjoying some good food with friends and family. So when it comes time to gather for Thanksgiving this year, be sure to pick up some Post Road Pumpkin Ales to share and enjoy.
