A Review of Watts Oatmeal Stout by Bull City Burger and Brewery

Over the past several months, Bull City Burger and Brewery in Durham, NC has become one of my go-to places for quality local brews. As I make my way down their product line, I have been discovering an abundance of zesty flavors and bold interpretations. While it's always fun to experience new and interesting flavors, there is still a lot to be said about a quality baseline beer. Once such brew is their Watts Oatmeal Stout.

In the glass, this beer has a stark black appearance complete with a thick and creamy white head. You can also find a deep ruby hue around the edges if you hold it up to a light source. The aroma here is very thin and hard to pin down. After a few attempts I was able to pick out some baseline roasted coffee-like notes, but little else. This beer doesn't offer a whole lot of foreshadowing, so you have to dive right in and get your taste buds involved.

The dominant trait on the first sip is definitely the mouthfeel, which is very smooth and creamy. This beer has a high level of drinkability and goes down very easily. The first flavor note to appear is a rich roasted coffee which almost borders on a mocha due to the creaminess. The beer smooths out even more as it warms, almost creating a milkshake type vibe. The hop profile is fairly muted, but does have a noticeable presence. The hop bitterness never takes center stage and tends to lurk below the roasted layer. Despite the smooth and creamy mouthfeel, there is also a gritty undertone that reminds you of a straight black coffee. It's not a bad thing, just occasionally noticeable. The aftertaste is surprisingly clean for a stout and doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Overall, the Watts Oatmeal Stout from Bull City Burger and Brewery is a very nice brew that can be enjoyed by all levels of beer fan. Novices especially should give Watts a try as it provides a delightful introduction into the oatmeal stout style. Seasoned beer drinkers will find Watts to be a fantastic baseline stout, one you can enjoy several of in a single sitting. I might even go so far as to say that it qualifies as a good session stout. So once again, hats off to Bull City Burger and Brewery. You continue to impress with your delicious arsenal of quality brews.
