The bark is much bigger than the bite
A Review of Double Stout by Green Flash Brewing Co.

Not too long ago, Green Flash made quite an impression on me with their West Coast IPA and Hop Head Red. Since that time I have kept an eye out for more of their selections. On a recent visit to my favorite local pub, I noticed a new Green Flash brew staring at me through the beer fridge window. That unmistakable bottle shape caught my attention and my stomach suddenly needed to make a new friend. I promptly ordered that black labeled bottle, which is how I met the Green Flash Double Stout.

In the glass, this beer is stark black with absolutely no edging coloration. It comes with a spongy tan head that likes to stick around for a while. On the nose, a smokey malt dominates the aroma profile. I tried to get more out of it, maybe some roasted traits or dark chocolates, but all efforts fell short. The smokiness is so potent that you half expect to be diving into a Rauchbier.

Despite the harsh introduction, the mouthfeel turned out to be quite thin and smooth with very little grit. I was definitely expecting something more chalky and aggressive, but that wasn't the case at all. It was surprisingly drinkable and easy to grasp. Dark chocolate notes ended up being the dominant flavor trait, which was an unexpected delight. It reminded me of smooth cocoa with a dark chocolate flare. The finish is clean and smooth with a bitter aftertaste that disappears almost as quickly as you notice it. This is really the only time you even notice the hop profile.

Overall, the Green Flash Double Stout is a very tasty brew that I can happily recommend to most levels of beer drinker. Stout fans will find this beer to be a rewarding variation. I think novices could benefit from this beer as well due to its easily drinkable nature. The 8.8% ABV is very well hidden, so be careful. The only aggressive part of this beer is the intro, so as long as you don't cave to the intimidation, you will be rewarded with a chocolatey delight. This beer's bark is much bigger than its bite. Don't be afraid to dive right in.
