Converting Those Stubborn Unbelievers
A Review of Moo-Hoo by Terrapin Beer

When turning people on to better beer, we like to use terms like “bridge” to describe beers with lots of good flavors that are easy on your taste buds. But sometimes you come across people who have had tried a respectable array of different beers and just don't like the general taste. They have given up on beer as an option and have settled into wines or liquors. This is fine and all, to each their own. But as I continue to explore the countless variations of flavor that today's beer world has to offer, I firmly believe that there is a beer out there for everyone (assuming you drink alcoholic beverages of course). This is where beers like Terrapin's Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout come into play. Don't like beer? No problem. How about chocolate milkshakes?

In the glass, Moo-Hoo has a jet black appearance with little edging. It comes with a coppery head that dissipates at a reasonable pace. The aroma is light and airy for a stout and takes on a creamy vanilla vibe. If you were to close your eyes and smell this beer as any random beverage, you would probably think it was a mocha milkshake. It's a sweet and pleasant aroma that has you looking forward to the first taste.

I would say the mouthfeel is what immediately grabs your attention with that first sip. Much like its namesake implies, this beer is very smooth and creamy, the definition of an easy drinking stout. As the beer warms, that thick milkshake vibe steadily increases, so be sure to take your time and enjoy the transition. Rich milk chocolates dominate the flavor profile and rest upon muted roasted malts. There is very little complexity to the taste, which is a merciful change of pace for stout novices. There is some hop sting on the exit, but not enough to flag for aggression. The finish is very light and clean, leaving behind a whiff of chocolaty goodness.

Overall, Terrapin's Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout is a fantastic everyman beer with a rich and savory flavor. I can recommend this beer to literally everyone. This is by no means a world class stout, but it's not meant to be. It's one of the few beers out there that can be enjoyed by beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers alike. The lighter 6% ABV and strong chocolate forward flavors make Moo-Hoo an easy drinking intro into better beer. In other words, this is the beer you use to convert those stubborn unbelievers. Just be sure to pick up some of these beauties while they last. Moo-Hoo is a seasonal brew that is only available during the winter months (there's a Boo-Hoo joke in there somewhere).
