Great
As you get to know certain breweries, you begin to apply adjectives to their style of brewing. This is especially true of consistent breweries who put a personal stamp on every beer they produce. Flying Dog is one such brewery and the adjective I would use to describe every beer in their arsenal is ''bite''. They all have bite in some way, usually in the form of a sharper than normal hop profile. So going into their Doggie Style Pale Ale, I'm expecting a quality example with, you guessed it, a little bite.

In the glass, this beer has a clear coppery coloration. It comes with a frothy white head that likes to stick around for a little while. The aroma consisted of the standard caramel malt, but with a peppering of spices. Nothing descriptive, just a general spice character that adds a little zest to the aroma. Exactly what I expected, a good pale ale with a little bite.

The first sip was properly in line with the aroma. What we have here is a solid pale ale with a nice balance of malt and hops. The malt consists of a toasted caramel quality. The hops have a tangy sting and a citrus character that takes the form of ripe grapefruit. The mouthfeel is mid-bodied, very crisp and smooths as it warms. It finishes crisp and tangy with a malty bitter aftertaste.

Overall, Flying Dog's Doggie Style Pale Ale is a solid brew with a decent kick. It's a little bit more aggressive than average, but not enough to turn off curious novices. Consequently, this is a beer that I can recommend to all levels of beer drinkers. It's a delightful session pale for experienced drinkers and a great palate builder for novices. Flying Dog has consistently impressed me with their delicious line of brews and they are often regarded as a haven for hop heads. But every now and then you can find a brew that bridges the gaps between all beer fans. Doggie Style Pale Ale is one such brew, so drink up and enjoy.
