A Review of Allagash Dubbel by Allagash Brewing Co.

When it comes to big bold Belgians, flavor is the defining characteristic. I know that seems like a painfully obvious statement, but what I mean is that the flavor should be the sole focus. Not the hops, not the alcohol, not the mouthfeel, not the malts. Every aspect of a good Belgian should be serving no other purpose than to build a complex yet balanced flavor. This is one reason why it is so very hard to craft a superb Belgian. That being said, the Allagash Dubbel is a delightful American version of a Belgian Dubbel.

In the glass, this beer has a rich dark brownish amber coloration. It comes with a frothy white head that has pretty good retention. On the nose, I detected some pungent sweetness that takes the form of brown sugar. This was by far the dominant trait, which was also complimented by some dark fruits, a few herbal notes, and a touch of nuttiness. Going into that first sip, I was expecting a thick and savory malty sweet Belgian.

Not surprisingly, this beer drinks really smooth. It has solid mid-level body that is easy to sink your teeth into. Surprisingly though, this beer finishes quite dry with a lingering bitter aftertaste. I found it odd for the style, but was not distracting. The flavor profile is wrapped in an earthy herbal blanket, which I found to be quite enjoyable. From there I was able to pick out all the signature Belgian Dubbel traits, namely dark fruits and a bready malty sweetness. The boozy character is noticeable, but not dominant in the least. It takes the form of a mind liquorice note that resides as an under layer.

Overall, the Allagash Dubbel is a delicious brew that deserves to be recognized on the Belgian beer scene. I greatly enjoyed the experience and can easily recommend this brew to any and all beer fans. Seasoned drinkers will raise an eyebrow in respect, while novices can utilize it as a fantastic intro into the wonderful world of Belgians. Allagash is a very well known and dependable brewery when it comes to rich and tasty Belgian brews. Their Dubbel is a delicious and accessible example of this, so use it as a starting line for continued exploration.
