Adding girth to springtime sessions
A Review of Gruffmeister Maibock by Foothills Brewing Co.

Even though I prefer the cooler months of fall and winter, the springtime heat still excites me for one big reason: the maibock. When spring rolls around, craft breweries around the globe start releasing this highly prized lighter version of the bock style (my personal favorite). Maibocks, or ''May'' bocks, are paler versions of bocks that are easy to drink, yet retain the strength and richness of a full bock. They are fascinating brews and are endlessly enjoyable. On a recent trip to my local beer store, I noticed that they had tapped a keg of the Gruffmeister Maibock from the Foothills Brewery, one of my favorite regional brewers. I did not pass Go nor did I collect my $200. I dropped my basket and immediately ordered a pint.

In the glass, this beer has a clear golden coloration with an orange tinting. It comes with a frothy white head that dissipates fairly quickly. On the nose, I detected a sweet grassy aroma with a hint of malty caramel. So far so good, so I dove in for that first sip. This beer immediately comes across as a very solid lager with a big body. The sweet malty caramel makes its presence known as the dominant flavor. The grassy flavor is also easily detectable, but more as an under layer. The beer actually has a very nice hop profile with good sting, but is more complimentary than distracting. The finish is quite clean and leaves behind a pleasant mixture of malty sweetness and hop tang.

Overall, Foothills' Gruffmeister Maibock is a very tasty brew with a solid presence. I found it to be on the heavier side of the maibock style, but that's by no means a detriment. It's a springtime treat for seasoned beer fans who want a little more girth in their sessions. It's also perfect for novices who want to explore easy drinking brews with more flavor and body. As a big fan of the bock style, I found Gruffmeister to be a worthy addition to the Foothills arsenal. At the very least, it's a welcome distraction as we anxiously await the winter release of their Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout.
