Delicious
In the craft brew world, sometimes the simplest of styles can be the hardest to master. Rich thick stouts can easily hide small flaws under layers of complexity and strength. Lagers, on the other hand, are quite vulnerable to even the most miniscule of defects. The style only showcases a handful of signature traits, so expectations can get very specific. Consequently, a slightly skewed taste can spell disaster for an otherwise decent lager. Also, this isn't even considering the glut of horrid lagers that are relentlessly churned out by the big beer companies. We're only talking about craft lagers and the breweries who care about making them right. One such delectable example is the Brooklyn Lager.

In the glass, this beer has a rich golden honey coloration with a copper tint. It comes with a frothy white head that dissipates at a normal pace. On the nose, that signature sweet malty base made its presence known first. I found it to be quite strong for the style, which foreshadowed a nice thick body. The hops presented themselves as earthy and grassy, right on the money for a good lager. Going into that first sip, I expected nothing more than a quality lager with a touch of meatiness.

Right off the bat you notice a wonderful balance of malt and hops. Neither side is dominant and both work very well together to form a delightful flavor profile. The hops are quite crisp, but without a significant sting, and take on an earthy floral flavor. The malt is also sweet and earthy, providing a nice complimentary base flavor. The mid-level body heightens the overall earthy vibe, giving this beer a solid meaty character that you can really sink your teeth into. At times the beer ventures into amber or Oktoberfest territory, but without losing its base lager identity. The finish is quite clean and leaves behind a sweet malty aftertaste.

Overall, the Brooklyn Lager is a very tasty interpretation of the lager style that I can happily recommend to all levels of beer fans. Its bold character makes it a win for seasoned drinkers, while its rich flavors make it a fantastic bridge beer for novices. The Brooklyn Brewery is well known for making high quality accessible beers, and this one is no different. It's a tasty treat for all palates, so stock up your cooler, call your friends, and let the fun begin.
