Enjoying a rare summertime treat
A Review of Festina Peche by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

When it comes to summer seasonal brews, few drinkers think of sour ales. These red headed step children of the craft beer world tend to confuse more than entice. It's a real shame because once you get past the sour layer, these beers are complex delights. It's the equivalent of breaking the IPA hop barrier when you first explored the style. What was once a mercilessly bitter brew has become savory and delicious. Dogfish Head fully understands this phenomenon, which is why they have no problem releasing a sour ale as their summertime representative. They call it the Festina Peche, a rare yet delicious Berliner Weisse fermented with peaches.

In the glass, this beer has a light and hazy straw coloration. It comes with a frothy white head that has decent retention. There are plenty of aromatic notes to highlight, none of which assert any dominance. In no particular order, I found a sourdough character, a strong grassy note, some tart citrus and an array of fruity sweetness. It's a very interesting aroma to study, so definitely take some time to breath it all in.

The mouthfeel is what immediately caught my attention with the first sip. It's an odd combination of thin and sticky, two traits that you rarely find together in beer. The tart citrus sets up shop as the dominant trait, but it's by no means overwhelming. It easily allows the sweet notes of peach and apricot to be found. The hop profile is significantly muted and almost unnoticeable, which is common for the style. The finish is clean, sour, and leaves behind a long lasting tart fruity aftertaste.

Overall, Dogfish Head's Festina Peche is a delightful summer brew with a highly refreshing quality. I should note that my review makes this beer sound a lot more caustic than it actually is. Just know that the Festina Peche is an easy drinking brew with a very approachable flavor. To be perfectly honest, it's an ideal brew for novices who wish to explore sour ales. It makes me wish that this beer was part of Dogfish Head's year-round product line because it also serves as a great educational tool. Seasoned drinkers will enjoy it as a refreshing example of a rarely found style while novices will appreciate the style insight. I will definitely be enjoying many more Festina Peches as the summer rages on. Cheers!
