Great
Whenever you mention Southern Tier to a fan of craft beer, chances are that they will swoon and start showering praise on their Blackwater series, which includes beers like the Crème Brûlée Imperial Milk Stout and the Mokah Imperial Stout. Southern Tier has made quite the name for themselves at the higher end of the darker spectrum. Unfortunately this tends to steal focus away from their core line, which includes their Porter. Today I thought I would show a little love to that standard darker style.

In the glass, the Southern Tier Porter has a deep dark brown coloration that is almost black. It comes with a creamy tan head that has really good retention. On the nose, I detected a strong roasted aroma, mostly a savory coffee with some mocha like chocolate notes. It's a solid intro for the style, so I leaned back to enjoy a quality session.

Right away I was greeted with a strong hop profile, which can unfortunately steal attention away from the roast, giving this beer a somewhat off-balanced feel. The roasted malt profile is very tasty though. It's comprised of a rich yet gentle coffee flavor along with a dark chocolate character. This beer has a thin mouthfeel for the style and tastes a little chalky, but actually drinks quite smooth. The exit is clean and smooth, leaving a malty bitter aftertaste.

Overall, the Southern Tier Porter is great baseline example of the style. I enjoyed the experience and can recommend it to most beer fans. Seasoned drinkers will view this beer as a solid darker session brew. Novices can enjoy the rich smooth flavors, but might struggle through the aggressive hop profile. Regardless, this beer is a worth member of the Southern Tier arsenal. I will certainly be using it for my random porter cravings, especially during the colder months. The hop jolt is especially nice for those beer fans like myself who enjoy a little kick from their darker sessions.
