Honoring my unwritten obligation
A Review of Tall Tale Pale Ale by Cambridge Brewing Co.

Craft beer fans have an unwritten obligation when they visit a new brewery. If possible, they have to try at least three different types of beers before they are allowed to formulate an opinion. Not styles mind you, types. First, you have to sample the flagship brew, or at least a recommended example from their core line. Second, you have to sample a seasonal brew. And lastly, you have to sample the craziest thing you can get your hands on. That formula will give any craft beer fan a good initial impression of any given brewery. On a recent trip to Boston, MA, I discovered the Cambridge Brewing Company. I honored my unwritten obligation and ordered the Tall Tale Pale Ale from their core line.

In the glass, this beer has a semi-hazy bright orange coloration. It comes with a rocky white head that likes to stick around for a while. I found little on the nose other than a faint citrus and some muted grain. This aroma is very thin and very mild, so it was quite difficult to formulate any initial impression. It certainly looked nice though, so I shrugged my shoulders and dove in for that first sip.

Right away you are greeted with a wispy hop sting that takes on a floral character. The hop profile rests upon a grainy toasted base. The mouthfeel is very crisp, very dry and has an overall tangy vibe. To be perfectly honest, this beer drinks a lot like a West Coast IPA. The finish is also quite dry, leaving an airy bitter aftertaste that lingers for a very long time. Conceptually, this beer is pretty simple. It's a hop-forward pale ale with little to dissect.

Overall, the Cambridge Tall Tale Pale Ale is a tasty brew with a tangy personality. It was a nice introduction to the brewery and I can recommend it to most beer fans. Novices might find this beer to be a tad aggressive, but seasoned drinkers should find it to be a delightful session pale ale. I am very pleased with my inaugural Cambridge brew and look forward to the next experience. One type down, two types to go. Stay tuned as my unwritten obligation continues.
