A Review of Cappuccino Stout by Lagunitas Brewing Co.

The Lagunitas Brewing Company out of California is well known for crafting some uniquely delicious beers. Very little about their brewery is standard or routine, down to their stumpy little 12 ounce bottles. Tasty beers like the ''Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale'' and the ''Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale'' have solidified them as not only a high quality brewery, but also one with an equally high quality sense of humor. They make great beers and they don't take themselves too seriously. That's a wonderful personality to have because it produces beers like the Cappuccino Stout.

In the glass, this beer has a deep dark brown coloration that is almost black, but not quite. It comes with a frothy, lightly creamy tan head that likes to stick around for a while. On the nose, I found a big bold coffee roast (shocking, I know). It's quite potent and beyond dominates the aroma. I also found a sweet alcohol layer resting underneath as well as hints of dark fruits. There is not a whole lot of mystery going into that first sip. I was expecting a rich blast of roasted coffee goodness.

Yup, that's exactly what I got. This particular flavor of coffee roast is very rich and very aggressive. So much in fact that each sip is like a shot of beer-infused espresso. This is a coffee lover's beer, pure and simple. Once you make peace with the roast profile, then you start to unearth a few other traits. I found some dark chocolate notes as well as a hint of vanilla. The alcohol burn is nicely quelled by the roast, so you can really take your time to study the rich flavors. The strong roast also mutes any notable hop presence. Despite the big bold body, this beer is amazingly drinkable. It might taste somewhat gritty, but it actually drinks clean and smooth. The beer finishes pretty clean and exits with a lightly bitter roasted malty aftertaste. I should also note that the beer smooths and balances as it warms, creating a mocha-like feel that is simply delightful.

Overall, the Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout is a delicious brew with a hefty dose of coffee goodness. I can easily recommend this brew to any seasoned drinker with an appreciation of dark roasts. I would say that this beer is hit or miss for novices, depending of course on their love of coffee. It's smooth and accessible enough to be a good bridge into coffee-based stouts, even at a respectable 9.2% ABV. Needless to say, one should proceed with caution because this beer packs a well hidden punch. Once again I have to tip my drinking hat to Lagunitas for yet another delicious creation. You have managed to marry brewing worlds in delectable fashion.
