A Review of White Chocolate Moo-Hoo by Terrapin Beer

Every now and then a beer can make you squeal in delight. Well, in this case, more like ''moo'' in delight. One of my favorite seasonal brews is the Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout, a savory winter ale from Terrapin Beer out of Athens, GA. Moo-Hoo is one of those brews that can be enjoyed by beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers alike. It manages to combine sweet and savory flavors in a way that is appealing and accessible to all. Beer geeks love it. Novices love it. Chocoholics love it. Foodies love it. It's just a damn fun beer and I get all giddy when I see it on the shelves. But this year, something magical happened...

I was sitting at my favorite local pub (Dain's Place in Durham, NC) having some lunch when a beer delivery truck pulled up outside. I thought nothing of it at the time, as I'm often there when the beer guy wheels in a restocking supply. Dain started unpacking the boxes, one of which was from Terrapin. He pulled out six 22 ounce bombers of a new brew. He stared at one for a second and said, ''Huh, I didn't know they made a white chocolate version,'' and then slid a bottle down the bar to me. I nearly gagged on my burger when I saw the label: White Chocolate Moo-Hoo. I squealed like a school girl as if to say ''me neither'' in the most embarrassing way possible. How could such a majestic creation escape my radar? No matter, to the glass with you!

In said glass, this beer has a stark black coloration. It comes with a creamy coppery head that has really nice retention. One the nose, I was greeted by that clean milk chocolate aroma that I know so well along with notes of cream and vanilla. Only this time, I detected that savory buttery note of white chocolate. Mmm mmm mmm, talk about one insanely inviting beer. I just closed my eyes, grinned ear to ear, and dove in for that first taste.

Wow. In the craft beer community, we tend to overuse a handful of words. Smooth is one of them. We use it to describe a general ease of drinking, something non-aggressive. But in this case, White Chocolate Moo-Hoo embodies what smooth really is: silky, clean, soft, easy. It's like drinking a down pillow. This is of course why Moo-Hoo has such a huge fan base. Flavor wise, everything is in place. I found a great base of roasted malt along with sweet milk chocolate, some notes of darker versions, cream, vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of coffee. The beer has a solid medium body and drinks like a dream. The beer finishes amazingly clean and exits with a sweet chocolaty aftertaste.

Overall, Terrapin's White Chocolate Moo-Hoo is a fantastic sweet stout. I was already a big fan of their original version and they hit a homerun with this one. It's often very difficult to improve on a beloved product, and Terrapin did so with a master stroke. I cannot recommend this beer enough to any and all beer fans. It's one of the very few beers out there that can appease the entire spectrum. Seasoned drinkers will love the savory winter flavors. Novices can use this brew as a wonderful introduction to rich darker brews. Even non-beer drinkers can test the waters with this treat and get a glimpse into the exciting world of craft beer. Hats off to Terrapin for a delectable creation. Now I have to see if I can get my hands on more before the season is over. To the beer store!
