Great
If I had to pick an ideal bridge builder into the world of better beer, I would probably choose the blonde ale. These light and sweet beers are the perfect compliments to hot summer days, yet they retain enough flavor and complexity to warrant year-round enjoyment. Because they are so light and easy to drink, brewers often dismiss them as introduction brews to focus more on their bigger and bolder lines. This strategy can be detrimental to the craft beer movement because simple revelation beers are necessary to hook novices. And when blonde ales are done correctly, they have an almost superhero level of conversion power. Michigan's Frankenmuth Brewery understands this all too well, which is why I lacked hesitation opening up their American Blonde in the dead of winter.

In the glass, this beer has the pale golden yellow coloration of a good blonde ale. It comes with a frothy white head that has nice retention. On the nose, I was greeted by a fresh grassy aroma, sweet pale malts, some lemony citrus, and a hint of butter. Everything is nicely balanced and nothing struggles for attention. It's important to understand that if you general reaction to a blonde ale is anything beyond ''mmm, beer'', then the brewer probably did something wrong. Frankenmuth got it right, it's a clean and refreshing introduction for an unassuming yet inciting beer style.

Another telling aspect of good blonde ales is a mirrored flavor profile. If you smell it, you should taste it. No surprises or hidden aggression. Here I tasted pale malts, biscuits, grass, herbs, and lemon zest all wrapped up in a smooth buttery mouthfeel. I also found a complimentary hint of honey. The hop profile is very mild and adds to the herbal flare. All flavors are in very good balance and no one aspect is dominant. The body is light, a tad crisp, easy drinking and refreshing. The beer finishes very clean and exits with a buttery grassy aftertaste.

Overall, Frankenmuth's American Blonde Ale is a solid and refreshing brew. It has great presence without a twinge of aggression. This is of course the hallmark of a good blonde ale. Can you taste an array of savory flavors? Check. Can you drink it all day long and never grow tired of it? Double check. As a result, I can easily recommend this brew to any and all beer fans. Seasoned drinkers will enjoy American Blonde as a light and satisfying break from bolder brews. Novices will be wowed by this beer's accessible myriad of flavors, which will hopefully hook them into craft beer for good. I have often regarded blonde ales as the answer to any generic ''gimme a beer'' request. I imagine there are countless bar and beer fridges ready to heed that call with a healthy stock of Frankenmuth American Blonde Ales. Ask and ye shall receive.
