A Review of Pater's Pale Ale by La Cumbre Brewing Co.

For craft beer fans, changing things up is essential to keeping experiences fresh and interesting. Case in point: when I ordered the Pater's Pale Ale at the La Cumbre Brewing Company pub, I wasn't necessarily craving a Belgian Pale Ale. I had just polished off their Elevated IPA, a world-class offering that tantalized my taste buds. I realized after the last drop vanished that if I followed it up with anything even remotely hoppy, I ran the risk of dismissing a great beer as dirty dish water by comparison. So after scanning their amazing beer menu in a small unreasonable panic, I decided upon the Pater's Pale Ale. From strong and hoppy to mild and spicy. Crisis averted.

In the glass, this beer had a warm orange-amber coloration. It came with a frothy white head that had very nice retention. On the nose, I was greeted by the signature sweet bready aroma of a good Belgian ale. I also found notes of vanilla, ripe melon, banana, mild spices, and a hint of tropical citrus. It was a soft and welcoming introduction, exactly what I needed as the perfect antithesis to a big bold IPA.

The softness of the aroma extended nicely to the body, which was light and airy. This was a smooth and easy drinking brew without a hint of aggression. The flavor profile was a savory marriage of candied malt and spicy bread. Rounding out the mix were notes of caramel, melon, banana, earthy herbs, and a faint nuttiness. The hop profile was mild and nicely complimented the spicy character. The beer finished bone dry and exited with a fruity bready aftertaste.

Overall, La Cumbre's Pater's Pale Ale is a savory brew with a fluffy persona. It has a lot of great flavor, subtle complexity, and is accessible to all levels of beer fans. Session-worthy Belgian ales are rare at a baseline and the Pater's Pale Ale certainly fits the bill. I could easily enjoy this nectar all day long and never grow tired of it.

Local beer fans know that La Cumbre's brew pub is the perfect place to do so. It's a pub for beer punks, complete with a mash-thick atmosphere, definitely one of the highlights of my visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The city's craft beer scene is bustling with quality and innovation, a big part of which is the La Cumbre Brewing Company. So if you ever find yourself in the area, make it a point to pay them a well-earned visit. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
