Seeing Red... an Amber Misadventure
A Review of Mermaid's Red Ale by Coronado Brewing Co.

I found Coronado Brewing Co.'s Mermaid's Red Ale in the ''make your own six pack'' section of my local craft beer store, i.e. the place where homeless beers go when their home pack gets overly cherry picked. It's completely hit an miss, which can be exciting when fishing for new brews. Mermaid caught my eye because, well, it's a red ale. Daddy loves his reds and I always get really excited when I find a new one.

I just wish I had researched the brewery before cracking this beer open. I found out after I had tried it that it had come from a restaurantery, or a brewaurant, whatever (restaurants that think they are breweries). Name one food-focused brewery that produces a stellar brew. *jeopardy theme* Exactly.

This information would have been nice to have when I poured it into the glass. This beer is bright red, sexy red, mouth-watering red. Anticipation was high, so I took a deep whiff. Wow, was that a mistake. It smelled like a sweaty sock, just completely unappealing. But I gave it the benefit of the doubt based on it's appearance. But alas, no bueno. The mouth feel was grainy and unpleasant, leaving a lingering bitter aftertaste. Flavor really depends on how you define the beer. ''Red'' should be nowhere near this beer's name. It's a so-so amber, period. But defined as a red, it's flat terrible.

Overall, Coronado' Mermaid's Red Ale is not a brew I can recommend. It's a shame that a beer can look so good but taste so bad. Just goes to show you that looks aren't everything, especially when it comes to beer.
