When you need the occasional reprieve
A Review of Agave Cerveza by Flying Dog Brewing Co.

Sometimes it's not the beer fan that finds the perfect beer, but the perfect beer finds the beer fan. Such was the case when I came across the Agave Cerveza, part of Flying Dog's always delectable Brewhouse Rarities series. Why was this the perfect beer at the perfect time you ask? Because I had just moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I wasn't on the usual beer hunt and was truthfully more interested in exploring the local craft beer scene. But, the Agave Cerveza just happened to perfectly capture the mood. What better way to beat the dry desert heat than with a quality Mexican-style lager.

As Flying Dog describes it, their Agave Cerveza is an ''ale brewed with agave nectar and with lime zest added''. Did you immediately picture yourself swinging in a shaded hammock on a hot summer day? I certainly did.

In the glass, this beer had a clear lemony yellow coloration. It came with a frothy white head that had good retention. On the nose, I was greeted by a pleasant aroma of light cracker malts, zesty lime citrus, and a hint of herbs. It was a definite departure from Flying Dog's usual hop-forward arsenal, but this was intelligent restraint. They managed to create a beer that perfectly satisfies our summertime cravings.

As expected, this beer had a very light body and felt airy crisp on the palate. You could easily drink your way through an entire six pack and not even notice. The flavor consisted of a cereal grain-like base with notes of cracker (which can be attributed to the flaked maize used in the brewing process). The sweet agave nectar was easy to identify and acted as a counterbalance to the lime citrus and muted hops. The beer finished mellow and clean with an airy sweet aftertaste.

Overall, Flying Dog's Agave Cerveza is a refreshing and delicious summertime treat. Its deceptively simple persona makes it a win for craft beer fans who need the occasional reprieve from big bold hops and thick meaty malts. This is a delightful session brew with high accessibility and easy flavor, one that I can happily recommend to all beer fans.

Agave Cerveza also goes a long ways in debunking the annoyingly persistent myth that light lagers are bland and boring. You can thank Big Beer for this unfortunate falsehood, which is why beers like the Agave Cerveza are so important. Flying Dog is a brewery well known for palate punishing hop bombs, yet they were able to take the concept of a simple adjunct lager and show us how delicious it can be. I can just picture brewmaster Matt Brophy strolling into some polished Big Beer executive office, slamming down a bottle of Agave Cerveza on the desk, then saying, ''that's how you do it, fellas.''
