The beer equivalent of a tall glass of lemonade
A Review of Brooklyn Sorachi Ace by Brooklyn Brewery

When I first sampled Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace Saison several years ago, it was still considered an experimental brew. It came in those large bomber bottles and was geared towards the more adventurous beer fans who craved exciting new flavors. Since then, its popularity exploded. A common barometer of a beer's success is when a bomber brew suddenly appears in smaller 12 ounce bottles. So when I came across a pack of Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace, I knew that the beer was here to stay. Thank goodness too, because this is one delicious brew.

As a little educational aside, the Sorachi Ace hop was developed by Japanese brewers back in 1988. It is a cross between the British Brewers Cold hops and the Czech Saaz hops. The result can be summed up in a single word: lemon. Lots and lots of lemon.

In the glass, this beer had a hazy sunny yellow coloration. It came with a big fluffy white head that liked to stick around for a while. On the nose, I was greeted by, you guessed it, a big burst of lemony citrus. Rounding out the aroma were notes of candied orange, sweet peppers, lemongrass, and a pleasant whiff of herbs. It was a much needed infusion of freshness as I muscled through the winter months.

The flavor closely mirrored the aroma with a dominate note of lemon citrus. Following close behind were lesser notes of orange, peppers, lemongrass, and mild herbs. Notable additions included light bread and savory fruit notes like pear and starfruit. The Sorachi Ace hops profile, while injecting a healthy dose of lemon, also came across as sharp and spicy. The beer had a light-to-medium body and switched between smooth and tangy on the palate. The beer finished very dry and exited with a grassy floral aftertaste.

Overall, I can sum up Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace in a single word: refreshing. Everything about this beer is rejuvenating and makes you crave a warm summer day. It is the beer equivalent of a tall glass of lemonade. Consequently, this is a brew that I can recommend to any and all beer fans. It's very easy to drink and it appeals to a wide variety of palates. This is also one of the very few beers that I can recommend to non-beer drinkers. Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace is the perfect bridge into craft beer for those wanting to explore this wacky world. One thing is for certain, no beer fan will ever look out of place with a Sorachi Ace in hand.
