Great
There are times when I'm grazing the isles at my local, when a beer can catch my eye for any number of reasons. It could be that it's an offering that I previously have been unable to find, or it could be a new offering from a reliable brewery. Honestly, there are countless reasons why my attention can be roped in. In this reviews particular case, it was a combination of 3 things. First of all, it was a Rogue offering. Second, it was a stout. Third, it was a CHOCOLATE stout. Put all three of these together, and it became a no brainer purchase for me.

When you crack this one open, it pours about as black as a beer can get. You could feel free to hold it up to the light, but take my word for it when I tell you that none is gonna make it through. There was about an inch of tan colored head that hung around for about half of the beer and gave some good lacing to that point. The first and easiest aroma to pick out was...wait for it...chocolate! This beer really lives up to the billing in that department. You pick up a very powerful and inviting dark chocolate smell that would remind you of a rich chocolate milk. If you work at it, you can pick up on some faint roasted malts, and some light coffee notes in there as well. Beyond that, you are hard pressed to find any other smells coming though.

The first sip has no surprises. The flavor pretty much follows what you smell. There is a very rich chocolate taste throughout the beer, that is complimented well by a slight bite in the form of a coffee flavor. There is an overall sweetness to the beer that takes you a second or two to get used to, but after that you can really settle in and enjoy its simplistic deliciousness. It's just a really good chocolate focused stout. You never pick up on any kind of hops flavor or bitterness in there, and I for one was glad. This beer really makes me think of dessert in a glass, and there is no room for bitter in my dessert.

The mouthfeel is a little thinner than one might expect in a stout. However, with the added sweetness in this one, the lighter body actually works. I feel as if it were any fuller, it might be a little hard to deal with. It has a carbonation level on the higher end, and this beer really wouldn't work without it. It really helps to clean things up and leave you with a surprisingly dry feel, and just a bit of a chocolate aftertaste.

I think any level of beer drinker could enjoy the Rogue Chocolate Stout. It would make an excellent beer for beginners looking to ease themselves into the better beer world. It has a good flavor, and drinks rather easily. There's nothing too strong or overpowering that would cause them any problems. The more advanced drinkers could enjoy this one for those exact same reasons. It's just a good tasting beer that one could drink a few of and not have any problems with it in the process. When it's all said and done, isn't that what we all are looking for anyway? Just take my word for it and grab one if you see one. It will give you a great reason to skip the dessert AND drink beer. Need I say more?
